A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Få filmar har vore så utskjelte, misforståtte, hylla og kultdyrka som A Clockwork Orange, og alle har kanskje litt rett. Filmen byggjer på Anthony Burgess' roman frå 1962 og vekte sterke reaksjonar frå første stund. Etter skuldingar om kopivald og truslar mot familien hans, trekte Kubrick sjølv filmen frå britiske kinoar, og der vart han ikkje vist att før etter at Kubrick døydde i 1999.

Vi følgjer den ultravaldelege unge Alex og dei tre «droogane» hans gjennom nettlege herjingar, til han hamnar i fengsel og vert utsett for Ludovico-metoden: ei behandling som gjer at han vert fysisk sjuk berre ved tanken på vald. Kritikarane har særleg hengt seg opp i valden, men kjernen i forteljinga er eit moralsk spørsmål: Har staten, med vitskapen i ryggen, rett til å ta frå eit menneske det frie valet mellom godt og vondt, same kva det har gjort?

Filmen er òg ein bitande satire. Skulen, rettsvesenet, politikarane, dei intellektuelle, vitskapen og foreldra får alle gjennomgå. Berre fengselspresten slepp nokolunde unna. Og Kubrick trekkjer oss inn i Alex si verd med alle verkemiddel: Alex ser rett på oss og fortel historia utan motstemmer, kamera, lys og det legendariske lydsporet held oss på hans side. Vi skal heie på han, slik at vi òg må ta straffa saman med han.

Filmen vert introdusert av Brage Kosmo (tidlegare student ved European Film College), og styret i filmklubben vil presentere seg sjølve og programmet framover.

Few films have been so reviled, misunderstood, celebrated and cult-worshipped as A Clockwork Orange, and each camp may have a point. Based on Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel, the film caused an uproar from the start. After accusations of copycat crimes and threats against his family, Kubrick himself withdrew it from British cinemas, where it went unseen until after his death in 1999.

We follow the ultraviolent young Alex and his three "droogs" through their nightly rampages, until he ends up in prison and is subjected to the Ludovico technique: a treatment that makes him physically ill at the mere thought of violence. Critics have fixated on the violence, but at its core the story asks a moral question: does the state, backed by science, have the right to strip a person of the free choice between good and evil, whatever they have done?

The film is also a biting satire. Schools, the justice system, politicians, intellectuals, science and parents all take a beating; only the prison chaplain comes out reasonably well. And Kubrick pulls us into Alex's world by every means available: Alex looks straight at us and narrates unchallenged, while camera, lighting and the famous soundtrack keep us on his side. We're meant to root for him, so that we have to take the punishment with him too.

The film is introduced by Brage Kosmo (former student at the European Film College), and the executive committee of the firm club will present themselves and the upcoming program.

Ho er overtydd om at ho stammar frå eit folk som vert forvandla til rovkatter når lidenskap eller sjalusi tek overhand. Med eit lite budsjett laga produsent Val Lewton og Tourneur ein film som skremmer med skuggar, lydar og antydningar i staden for monster. Scena i symjebassenget og den berømte «bussen» skapte ein skrekkteknikk som framleis vert kopiert.

Tre filmstudentar går inn i skogen utanfor Burkittsville i Maryland for å lage ein dokumentar om ei lokal heksesegn. Dei kjem aldri ut att, men opptaka deira vert funne. Filmen kosta nesten ingenting, vart marknadsført som om han var ekte og vart ein av dei mest lønsame filmane nokon gong. Han gjorde «found footage» til ein eigen sjanger og viser at ein steinhaug, nokre kvistfigurar og ein skrik i mørkret kan vere meir enn nok.

Serbian-born illustrator Irena falls in love in New York, but can't bring herself to get close to the man she marries. She is convinced she descends from a people who turn into big cats when passion or jealousy takes hold. On a shoestring budget, producer Val Lewton and Tourneur made a film that scares with shadows, sounds and suggestion rather than monsters. The swimming pool scene and the famous "bus" gave birth to a horror technique still copied today.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

Three film students head into the woods outside Burkittsville, Maryland, to make a documentary about a local witch legend. They never come back, but their footage is found. Made for next to nothing and marketed as if it were real, it became one of the most profitable films ever made. It turned found footage into a genre of its own and proved that a pile of stones, a few stick figures and a scream in the dark can be more than enough.

Mary and Max (2009)

Mary and Max (2009)

Mary is eight years old, lives in a Melbourne suburb and has no friends. One day in 1976 she picks a random name from the New York phone book and sends a letter. The recipient is Max, a lonely 44-year-old man with Asperger's syndrome who finds the world chaotic and baffling. So begins a pen-pal friendship that will last twenty years, full of chocolate, questions about where babies come from and all the hard things in between.

Adam Elliot, who previously won an Oscar for his short Harvie Krumpet, spent five years crafting the film in clay, frame by frame. The result is a world of greys and sepia tones, as full of dark humour as it is of warmth. Mary and Max opened the Sundance Film Festival in 2009 and won the top prize at Annecy, and has since become a beloved cult favourite. A film about loneliness, friendship, and how hard and how important it is to accept others, and yourself, as you are.

Note: Although animated, this film is not made for children. It deals with depression, alcoholism and attempted suicide.

Together with Dickon, who can talk to animals, and her hidden-away cousin Colin, who has never been outdoors, Mary sets out to bring the garden back to life. And as the flowers begin to bloom, something changes in the children too.

Based on Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic 1911 children's book, the film has beautiful images, a lovely score and Maggie Smith as the strict housekeeper. A warm story about friendship, courage and how good it feels to care for something. Perfect for a dark December evening!

For parents: The film opens with Mary losing her parents in an earthquake, and some scenes may be a little scary for the youngest. Best suited for children aged about 7 and up.

Kanskje ikkje ein typisk julefilm, men ein film om det som betyr mest når det er som mørkast: å finne nokon å dele det med.

Kanskje ikkje ein typisk julefilm, men perfekt for romjula: dagane mellom det gamle og det nye året, når tida står litt stille og ein har rom til å kjenne etter. Akkurat slik Bob og Charlotte har det, fanga mellom to liv i ein by som aldri søv.
